KUALA LUMPUR | A "suicide bomber" detonated himself at KL Sentral killing five people and injuring 30 early this morning.

"Victims" were seen sprawled on the ground and pleading for help. Emergency medical service, police and fire and rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene for search and rescue mission.

This "bloody" scene at the station's transit concourse at Level 1 at 12.30am was actually a crisis and disaster drill code-named “Ex-Sentral”.

Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) vice-president and head of building services, Wan Shahriman Wan Mohamad, said it conducted to minimise risk and ensure that their emergency response plan is effectively executed.

“This simulation exercise is an annual programme and it has entered its ninth year,” he said, adding that it started at midnight to train their emergency response team to handle complicated situations.

“We used to do the drill during peak hours. This time, we want to see how the emergency response plan can operate effectively in the wee hours.”

He said after the "bomber" activated his "explosives", members of the public at Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 were ordered to evacuate the building to gather at an open area nearby.

Since the simulation was done beyond operation hours, the train services and other public transports were not affected and continued to operate as usual.

Federal Territory Fire and Rescue Department operation assistant director Azizan Ismail said their operation room received a distress call on the ‘incident’ at 12.40am, and 100 firemen in six trucks from five stations around the city were deployed.

“The search and rescue operation was assisted by the Hazard Material (Hazmat) team, police bomb squad and K9 police dog unit to detect any unsafe material inside the building.”

The two-hour operation, which ended at 2.30am, also involved personnel from the Brickfields district police headquarters, Department of Railways, National Security Council, KL Hospital emergency department, Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad, Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd and RapidKL.
